          1. Hey friends, I’ve got something to share. So I go to a public high school in central Pennsylvania. We moved into a huge new building this year, and it has a bunch of gender-neutral bathrooms, but for teachers only.

Students must feel safe to learn. In high school, ppl are experimenting with their identities. Over 1/3 of LGBTQ+ students missed 1+ day of school in the last month because of feeling unsafe. We need (private) gender-neutral facilities for anyone who would feel more comfortable.

At my school now, we have 1, in the nurse’s office. A trip could easily take 15+ mins of class time, and students likely explaining to their (well-meaning) teachers why they were gone for so long. This requires a lot of self-confidence, and it’s discriminatory.

I gave a public speech to my principal about opening up gender-neutral bathrooms to everyone, and he said they need more surveillance. (Every inch of hallway is covered by 4K security cameras and microphones.) No, we can just use the bathroom, without being watched by teachers.

My town is for the most part pretty accepting. But there’s no legal requirement for schools to have gender-neutral bathrooms, as my (also well-meaning, though unsupportive) principal reminds me. So I’m going to keep making a scene and demanding what I see as our basic rights.

I don’t have a big call to action here. But anyway, that’s something I’ve been up to. Students need to feel safe in order to learn, hands down.
